I think so.  The copied graph would not care about where
the root is "planted".

I think there is a good chance that this trick would work
for ZODB.

I don't think conversion is that difficult.  The early releases of
Durus included the conversion script that we used here
when we converted our ZODB databases to Durus.
Those versions are still available for download if you
are interested.  They might be a good starting point, if
you have an actual conversion to implement.
