hi arif,

    von mises stress is one which gives a generalised stress distribution on a
surface which satisfy certain criteria called von mises conditions which defines
some failure criterion.

    if for example you are trying to get the stress distribution on the surface
of a substrate then you go for normal x and y stresses option(in hypermesh).

  i hope this helps. plz let me kno what kind of application u need stresses
for.
