It sounds like this is more of a problem with LinkCad than anything else. You might want to try a different route. If you really need to do that though, maybe try a font like Deplof. You can get it from the WieWeb website. I use it because it's designed to prevent small, normally disconnected font parts (like the circle in an "O") from flying off during development / etching but they also claim it reduces file sizes. It's free too.
