MEMS research Chair and undergraduate programs

Hi - Im Dr. Ian Gibson from the Mechanical Engg. Dept. at The Hong Kong
University. I have just attempted to subscribe to this mailing list. I hope I
am successful.

We here at HKU are new to MEMS. However, we see it as a major growth area and
therefore intend to extend the scope of activities within this department to
include MEMS. Amongst other things, we have established a new Structural Chair
in Automation. My Head of Dept. Prof. Allen Chwang (formerly of Caltech) has
stated that this Chair should focus on MEMS. Maybe if you are interested, or
know of anyone, then you can enquire informally through me. We realise that
this is a very small, tight community. The likelihood of finding a suitable
person for the Chair is slim. This is partly the reason for mentioning it here
and I hope this is not considered an abuse of this system. It is also the
reason why we are also likely to consider good candidates for other positions
to the Chair.

Secondly, we are considering the establishment of a new undergraduate program
in MEMS to start in 1998. I have been surfing the WWW for similar programs
elsewhere. Up to now I have found a number of research centres but no teaching
programs. I have seen one or two mentions of MEMS or similar acronyms inside
more general programs. However, nothing with any detail. Maybe some of you more
informed people know of one.

If you were to set up a teaching program, what would you consider imoprtant for
inclusion?

Any additional comments would be welcomed.
