MEMS colleges, I recently sent a note to Bill Hagen, Manager of IEEE Copyrights & Trademarks, asking him if it was ok to put a postscript version of my IEEE publications on the net. He said that it is fine as long as I include the appropriate copyright/credit line and paragraph that he has given in his message below. His note answers some nagging questions about the legality of making journal papers freely available on the net. I am in the process of getting similar statements from the Transducers Foundation, and the Electrochemical Society. There are many other publishers that should be consulted but I won't get their information/policy until I have a need for it. If someone already has a copy of this kind of statement from other publishers, please send me a note. I will compile all the information and make it available on the net at: http://www-bsac.eecs.berkeley.edu/archive/copyright_info.txt The first impression of most people is that publishers will NOT allow the free distribution of on-line versions of papers published in their periodicals. Be this as it may, it is apparent that the IEEE does not feel this way. After speaking to a representative of Elsevier I believe they have a similar attitude (I am still waiting for an official letter). -Jack PS - Wouldn't it be great if MEMS conferences published their proceedings and technical digests on-line? It sure would make it easier to get a copy of a paper in the proceedings since _very_ few libraries get copies of the proceedings. Oh well, one step at a time.
