A curious example of such sensor has been developed at MCNC for Prof.
M.Sheetz, Chairman of Cell Biology Dept. at Duke University.  They use
deflection of a beam to evaluate the force between a cell and a surface
as the former crawls over the latter.  See his webpage (I don't have the
