I am Yes, it is spam, because Frank never consented to have his e-mail used for such a purpose. Subscribers to the mems-talk list provide their e-mail addresses for the purpose of receiving messages posted by other subscribers. That does not imply that they want to receive random advertising, MEMS-related or not, and in fact the list charter states "Mailing list postings are copyrighted by the respective poster. List postings and the list archives are not intended for commercial or any other activity." Unfortunately, there aren't many technical measures to prevent extracting e-mail addresses. We try to catch Web spiders crawling the archives for e-mail addresses, but the archives also need to be indexed by Google and other search engines, so there's a limit to what's possible. Please see part 2 of the news.admin.net-abuse.email FAQ for more information about the ethics (or lack thereof) of spam: http://www.spamfaq.net/spam-evils.shtml . -- A.M.
