Al, For answers to your questions on thermal modeling and analysis you can refer to these books- 'Transport Phenomina' by R. B. Bird, W. E. Stewart, E. N. Lightfoot or 'Analysis of Transport Phenomina' by W. M. Deen. Typically, enthalpy will not figure into heat transfer equations, but specific heat and thermal conductivity will. Enthalpy is usually used in thermodynamics analyses.. We use FEMLAB to carry out modeling/simulation of thermal and other transport-related problems for our devices. It is a matlab based tool for finite element modeling/analysis of 3-d geometries and for solving coupled PDEs representing physical phenomina and comes with good tutorial examples. You can ask for a demo version (www.femlab.com), we have found it to be well suited for such analysis compared to other packages. Note that you will also need Matlab to use it.
