"resolve" seems like a good name for this.

Isn't that iff listed and not already present in the namespace?  I'm
probably just being picky about having it spelled out again, but since
this whole subject is still a little fuzzy to me, though it's starting
to look like it might be very useful after all.

And is this then entirely replacing the current attempt to guess what
to try to import?
