I've been suggesting this sort of thing in various places - it's one
of the areas that I've found Python harder to get started in - lack of
good examples of applications.

There are tons of nice frameworks, network libs, and all kinds of cool
technical things, but for less stellar programmers like myself (not
likely to learn a new language by "playing around" with a distributed,
real-time, blah blah blah application like many Pythonistas seem
capable of) this kind of project is a big help.
