Under HTTP 1.1 the browser sends, with the request, a header "Host:" that contains such info, and is needed for letting virtual hosting work. Looking at the code, request.get_url calls request.get_server, that returns request.environ["SERVER_NAME"], so it's the server that reverse-resolves the IP the browser. The OP said it tried with both Medusa and Apache, so it looks like both of them do this.
