Neil,

Just to keep you informed, the problems have continued, even with
max_children=1 for scgi.  When on-site next I will try the cgi2scgi - I take
it that will indicate whether or not Apache + SCGI is causing the problem, or
my own code (if it continues to fail with cgi2sci).
