While this is taken out of context from Kevin's post, I would like to add my vote for either a utf-8 default or an easily configurable initialization for Quixote. My applications have to deal with both Japanese and English for the most part, and I'll have to add support for about 15 other languages in the future (including Chinese and Korean). Utf-8 (and internal unicode) is the easiest solution I can think of, but for the time being I've had to hack away at Quixote to (almost) transparently deal with the encoding aspect that it's rather unstable. I've noticed that I'm not the only one with this problem either, but we are no doubt in the minority and open source certainly favours the majority, unfortunately (or at least the main developers goals, obviously).
